Koka Lagoon Cruise: Rarotonga’s Best Glass Bottom Day Out
Koka Lagoon Cruise is a popular tourist attraction located on the stunning Muir Beach in Rarotonga. The cruise offers visitors the opportunity to explore the crystal-clear waters of the Muri Lagoon while taking in the breathtaking views of the lush greenery and coral reefs.
The cruise is perfect for families, couples, and solo travellers seeking an unforgettable experience.
The Koka Lagoon Cruise is a half-day tour that includes snorkeling, fish feeding, and a cultural show.
The tour starts with a scenic boat ride through the lagoon, where visitors can spot various marine life such as colorful fish, sea turtles, and even giant clams.
The highlight of the tour is the snorkeling session, where visitors can swim with the fish and explore the coral reefs. The cultural show is an excellent opportunity for visitors to learn about the Cook Islands’ rich culture and history.
The show includes traditional dances, music, and a demonstration of how to husk a coconut and even climb a coconut tree.
Overall, the Koka Lagoon Cruise is a must-do activity for anyone visiting Rarotonga.
Your Koka Lagoon Cruise Experience:
The Koka Lagoon Cruise is a quintessential excursion for those seeking to immerse themselves in the natural wonders of Muri Lagoon. Departing from the shores of Muri Beach, the cruise takes you on a leisurely exploration of the breathtaking lagoon and its surrounding islets.
The tour is a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, promising a day filled with sun-soaked moments and cultural discoveries.
While onboard the boys (crew) will have you entertained with their ukulele playing sing-along, trust me there is never a dull moment. The crew are always smiling and cracking jokes.
Snorkeling in the Marine Wonderland:
One of the highlights of the Koka Lagoon Cruise is undoubtedly the opportunity to explore the vibrant marine life within the lagoon. The coral here is growing and the crew shares how they are continuing to restore and grow new coral within the lagoon.
You can then snorkel around the area and marvel at the kaleidoscope of colourful coral and tropical fish that call this underwater wonderland home.
Maybe you might even see a friendly sea turtle. These are just a few of the treasures awaiting those who dip beneath the surface.
There are life jackets and noodles on board for those who are not so confident in the water. Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler or a first-timer, the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon provide an unforgettable glimpse into the rich biodiversity of Rarotonga.
Snorkelling equipment is provided but you can bring your own.
For those who prefer to stay dry but still want to witness the underwater wonders, the Koka Lagoon Cruise offers a glass-bottom boat. It guides effortlessly over the coral gardens and you will be able to observe the marine life through the boat’s transparent floor, providing a mesmerising perspective of the lagoon’s hidden treasures.
Motu Koromiri: Lunch, Entertainment and Culture
The cruise includes a visit to one of the pristine motu (small islets) that dot the lagoon. Here on Motu Koromiri (means “No touching island”), you will indulge in a delicious BBQ feast featuring traditional Cook Island and Western cuisine, with tropical salads in-season fruits and refreshing filtered water.
While the crew prepares the feast you will be able to wander around and explore the island before returning to the dining area and enjoying the feast at one of the many picnic tables in the shade.
After lunch, you will be treated to a specular and entertaining show from the crew.
Volunteers from the audience are always being encouraged to participate in the activities… so don’t be shy if you get the chance to join in.
The show will have you learning about coconuts and the diverse food types, before kicking in with a sing-along. Afterward, there is a demonstration on how to open a coconut safely and how to climb a coconut tree.
Breenie, a mate, happily volunteered for this part and… well… was massively unsuccessfully. However, he provided plenty of entertainment.
There is a little bit of time after the demonstrations to swim in the lagoon or relax under a coconut tree before the crew calls you back on the boat for the final cruise across to lagoon and back to Muri Beach.

Hi, I've been fortunate enough to have travelled for over 25 years. My parents gave me the travel bug when I was 10 years old by taking my sister and I to the USA and Mexico for two months. I've travelled by myself, with mates, with my wife and now as a family of four. My goal is to inspire our families to get out and see the world.
