Sveti Stefan: Relaxing, Swimming & Soaking in the Views

Montenegro | 0 comments

Sveti Stefan was at the top of our must-see list when we planned our Montenegro itinerary, and it did not disappoint.

As a perfect day trip from Budva, this destination combined breathtaking scenery, fascinating history, and a touch of exclusivity that made it feel truly special.

We hopped on a local bus from Budva, which conveniently dropped us at the top of the hill overlooking Sveti Stefan.

From this vantage point, the views were absolutely spectacular, the kind that makes you stop and soak it all in.

From there, we followed a winding staircase down to the beach.

Be warned, there are quite a few stairs, so wear comfortable shoes and take your time!

Sveti Stefan is a picturesque island village off the Montenegrin coast, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway.

Sventi Stefan Island

This tiny fortified island offers a remarkable blend of history, natural beauty, and luxurious charm.

With origins tracing back to the 15th century, Sveti Stefan began as a humble fishing village.

Over time, it transformed into an elite retreat, attracting celebrities and royalty from around the world.

Today, it’s one of Montenegro’s most iconic and photographed spots.

The island’s exclusivity, however, does come with a catch.

Access to Sveti Stefan is limited to guests staying at the luxury resort housed within its historic walls.

Unfortunately, there are no day passes or public tours available, which means you can’t simply wander the cobblestone streets or explore the island’s interiors unless you’re a guest.

While this may feel disappointing, the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding beach area more than make up for it.

For us, visiting Sveti Stefan wasn’t just about getting inside the island, it was about soaking in the stunning views, strolling along the pristine beaches, and enjoying the serene atmosphere.

Whether you’re a history buff, a luxury lover, or someone looking for incredible photo opportunities, Sveti Stefan is a place that leaves a lasting impression.

History of Sveti Stefan

Sveti Stefan has a rich history that dates back to the 15th century when it emerged as a fishing village.

Initially, it was a refuge for fishermen from the surrounding waters of the Mediterranean.

The preservation of its cultural heritageshowcases its significance throughout the years.

The village grew into a fortified town, strategically located to protect itself from invaders.

Its walls and towers served as a vital defence against threats, particularly from the Ottomans and pirates.

In 1423, Sveti Stefan fell under the protection of the Republic of Venice.

The local community, known as the Paštrovići, accepted Venetian control to ward off Turkish attacks. This led to an era of stability that allowed further development.

Valuable resources were cultivated on the island, including olive trees, contributing to its local economy.

The island is also home to several historic sites, such as the Praskvica Monastery, which reflects the rich religious heritage of the area.

As a tombolo, Sveti Stefan connects to the mainland near Pržno, enhancing its accessibility.

The nearby Budva Riviera and the historic town of Kotor further underline its geographical significance.

In the 20th century, Queen Marija Karađorđević transformed the island into a luxurious resort, enhancing its status as a cultural and tourist destination.

Today, Sveti Stefan stands as a testament to its long and fascinating history, alongside the natural beauty of Kotor Bay.

Stairs… lots of stairs

Sveti Stefan beach was a great spot to relax, with refreshing, clear waters perfect for cooling off after the walk down.

Just make sure you have reef/beach shoes as walking on the peddles/stones/rocks isn’t all that comfortable.

While we couldn’t explore the island itself, since it’s only accessible to guests staying there, we still enjoyed admiring its beauty from the shore.

Despite this, we made wonderful family memories, soaking up the sun, playing in the water, and simply appreciating the stunning Montenegrin coastline.

Sveti Stefan was a must-visit on our itinerary, and even though we couldn’t step onto the island, the experience was absolutely worth it!

Hi, I've been fortunate enough to have travelled for over 25 years. My parents gave me the travel bug when I was 10 years old by taking my sister and I to the USA and Mexico for two months. I've travelled by myself, with mates, with my wife and now as a family of four. My goal is to inspire our families to get out and see the world.
