Discover Makarska: A Paradise for Nature Lovers and Beach Seekers

We arrived in Makarska on a recommendation from one of my wife’s work mate.

We left our accommodation in Okrug Gornji, took a local bus to Trogir’s bus station and from here made it short stop in Split before heading on to Makarska. 

Now if you are afraid of heights, like me, you might want to sit on the left hand side of the bus. I wish I had! 

While the scenery is breathtaking the shear drop from the side of the road sent my nerves through the roof… deep breaths, just take deep breaths. 

Upon arriving we had a short walk to our Airbnb accommodation. Again the scenery in Makarska is jaw dropping. 

We could instantly see why Makarska beckons travellers and holiday makers with its palm-fringed promenade and captivating blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture.

This charming town, situated on the Makarska Riviera in the heart of Dalmatia, offers a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.

Whether you’re seeking a family-friendly resort or a base for outdoor pursuits, Makarska caters to diverse tastes.

From lounging on lovely beaches to hiking the rugged slopes of Mount Biokovo, you’ll discover a wealth of activities to fill your days.

For us, we had 3 days to explore, relax and see everything we planned and then some. Here is what we loved about Makarska and one thing that didn’t quite go as smoothly as we’d hoped.

Geographic Location and Climate

Makarska sits at the foot of the Biokovo Mountains, facing the Adriatic Sea.

Its unique position creates a distinctive Mediterranean climate, offering visitors a blend of mountain and coastal experiences.

Biokovo Mountains

The Biokovo Mountains form a dramatic backdrop to Makarska. Mount Biokovo, the highest peak, rises 1,762 metres above sea level.

This impressive natural barrier shields the town from harsh continental winds.

You’ll find diverse flora and fauna in the Biokovo Nature Park.

The park’s limestone karst formations create a rugged landscape dotted with caves and chasms.

Hiking trails offer panoramic views of the Adriatic coastline and nearby islands. On clear days, you can even spot Italy across the sea.

Mediterranean Climate

Makarska enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

Summers are perfect for beach holidays, with temperatures often reaching 30°C in July and August.

You’ll experience over 2,700 hours of sunshine annually. Winters are mild, with average temperatures rarely dropping below 5°C.

Rainfall is more common in winter months. The Biokovo Mountains influence local weather patterns, sometimes causing sudden temperature changes.

The Adriatic Sea moderates temperatures year-round. Sea temperatures peak in August, making it ideal for swimming and water sports.

History

Makarska’s history spans millennia, from ancient settlements to its modern role as a coastal resort town.

The area’s strategic location and natural beauty have shaped its development through different eras.

Archaeological evidence suggests human habitation in the Makarska area dates back to 6000 BC.

The Bubnjavača cave, situated above the Vepric sanctuary, is one of the oldest inhabited sites in the region.

During Roman times, Makarska likely served as a small port.

Its importance grew in the medieval period as it became a focal point for trade and maritime activities.

The town’s development accelerated in the 19th century. Under Austrian rule, Makarska emerged as a fashionable seaside resort.

The construction of the first hotel in 1914 marked the beginning of Makarska’s transformation into a tourism hub.

Best Things to Do in Makarska

Makarska offers a wealth of attractions and activities for visitors to enjoy. From stunning beaches and natural wonders to historical sites and outdoor adventures, this Croatian coastal gem has something for everyone.

Relax on the Beaches

Makarska’s beautiful beaches are a major draw for tourists. The main beach, Makarska Beach, stretches for nearly 2 km along the coast.

Its pebbled shore and crystal-clear waters make it perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

However, we struggled with the crowds, there were so many people that we had to keep our boys in arms reach when we were in the water.

To be honest, it wasn’t really relaxing.

For a quieter experience, head to nearby Brela or Tucepi.

These smaller beaches offer a more secluded atmosphere whilst still providing stunning views of the Adriatic Sea.

Don’t forget to pack water shoes, as the pebbles can be uncomfortable underfoot.

Beach umbrellas and loungers are available for hire if you prefer some shade.

 

Biokovo Skywalk

For breathtaking views, visit the Biokovo Skywalk.

This glass-floored observation deck juts out from Biokovo Mountain, offering panoramic vistas of the Makarska Riviera and nearby islands.

The skywalk is located 1,228 metres above sea level and extends 13 metres from the cliff face. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but the views are truly spectacular.

To reach the skywalk, you’ll need to drive up the winding mountain road.

It’s advisable to go early in the day to avoid crowds and potential queues.

Wander Around Makarska’s Old Town

Makarska’s Old Town is a charming area filled with historic buildings and narrow cobblestone streets.

Start your exploration at the main square, Kačić Square, dominated by the Baroque-style Church of St. Mark.

Visit the Franciscan Monastery, which houses a fascinating collection of seashells in its Malacological Museum.

The monastery’s peaceful courtyard is a lovely spot to take a break from sightseeing.

Don’t miss the statue of Fra Andrija Kačić Miošić, a famous Croatian poet, in the square.

The surrounding cafes and restaurants are perfect for people-watching and sampling local cuisine.

Walk Along the Promenade

Makarska’s seafront promenade is a bustling hub of activity, especially in the evenings.

This palm-lined walkway stretches along the harbour, offering beautiful views of the sea and moored boats.

You’ll find numerous cafes, bars, and restaurants along the promenade.

It’s an ideal spot for an evening stroll, watching the sunset, or enjoying a coffee whilst taking in the lively atmosphere.

Street performers often entertain visitors during the summer months, adding to the vibrant ambiance.

The promenade is also a great starting point for boat trips to nearby islands.

Stroll Through St Peters Forest Park

St Peters Forest Park offers a refreshing escape from the bustling beaches and town centre.

This pine forest provides welcome shade on hot summer days and is crisscrossed with walking trails.

The park is home to various Mediterranean plants and offers stunning sea views from its highest points.

You’ll find benches scattered throughout, perfect for a picnic or a quiet moment of relaxation.

Look out for the small chapel of St. Peter, which gives the park its name. The park is easily accessible from the town centre and is free to enter.

Visit the Mount Biokovo Nature Park

Mount Biokovo Nature Park is a haven for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts.

The park boasts diverse flora and fauna, including over 1,500 plant species, some of which are endemic to the area.

There are numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty levels. The most popular is the trail to Vošac peak, which offers panoramic views of the coastline and nearby islands.

For a less strenuous option, take the scenic drive to Sv. Jure, the highest peak in the park.

Remember to bring plenty of water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear for your visit.

Watersports on the Riviera

The Makarska Riviera is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. You can try your hand at various activities, including:

The peaceful atmosphere of the monastery adds to the unique experience. After visiting the museum, take a moment to explore the monastery’s beautiful courtyard and garden.

 

Aquaparks

For family-friendly fun, visit one of the aquaparks near Makarska.

These water parks offer a range of slides, pools, and activities suitable for all ages.

The most popular is Aquapark Dalmatia in nearby Brela. It features various water slides, a lazy river, and a children’s area.

There’s also a restaurant and bar on-site for refreshments.

Another option is the inflatable water park in Makarska harbour. This floating obstacle course provides hours of entertainment for both children and adults.

 

Eat at a Beachside Cafe or Restaurant

No visit to Makarska is complete without sampling the local cuisine at a beachside cafe or restaurant. Many establishments offer outdoor seating with stunning sea views.

Try traditional Dalmatian dishes such as:

• Peka (meat or octopus cooked under a bell-shaped lid)
• Fresh grilled fish
• Black risotto
• Pašticada

Best Day Trips from Makarska

Makarska serves as an excellent base for exploring the stunning Dalmatian coast and nearby islands.

These day trips offer a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical sites, and vibrant local culture.

Brac Island

Brac Island is a must-visit destination from Makarska.

You can reach the island by taking a ferry taking a ferry from nearby Makarska.

The journey takes about an hour, offering picturesque views of the Adriatic Sea.

Once on Brac, head to the famous Zlatni Rat Beach.

This unique V-shaped pebble beach is surrounded by crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and water sports.

You can also visit the charming town of Bol, known for its Venetian-style architecture and quaint streets.

For history enthusiasts, the Blaca Monastery is a hidden gem.

This 16th-century hermitage is carved into a cliff face and offers a fascinating glimpse into monastic life.

Hvar Island

Hvar Island is another popular day trip destination from Makarska.

You can reach Hvar by taking a speedboat tour, which allows you to explore the island’s hidden gems.

Hvar Town, the island’s main hub, boasts impressive Venetian architecture and a bustling harbour.

Visit the Spanish Fortress for panoramic views of the town and surrounding islands.

The lavender fields of Hvar are a sight to behold, especially in bloom during June and July.

You can also explore the charming villages of Stari Grad and Jelsa, known for their laid-back atmosphere and excellent local wines.

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is a stunning natural wonder located between the islands of Drvenik and Krknjasi.

You can reach this paradise by joining a boat tour Makarska. 

The lagoon’s shallow, turquoise waters are perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The seabed is visible through the crystal-clear water, allowing you to spot various marine life.

Many tours include snorkelling equipment, so you can fully explore the underwater world.

Nearby, you’ll find secluded beaches where you can relax and soak up the sun.

Some tours also include visits to the charming fishing village of Maslinica on Solta Island, where you can enjoy fresh seafood and local wine.

Makarska is easily accessible by various modes of transport.

The town’s coastal location and proximity to major airports offer travellers multiple options for reaching this picturesque destination.

Arriving by Sea

Catamaran services connect Makarska to nearby islands and coastal cities.

You can catch a ferry from Split to Makarska during the summer season, offering a scenic journey along the Adriatic coast.

The trip takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.

For those travelling from Brač island, a car ferry operates between Sumartin and Makarska.

This route is particularly convenient if you’re driving, as it allows you to bring your vehicle to the mainland.

Arriving by Air

The nearest major airport to Makarska is Split Airport, located about 80 kilometres away. From here, you have several options to reach Makarska:

• Rent a car and drive along the coastal road (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes)
• Take a pre-booked shuttle service
• Use public transport (bus) from Split city centre

Dubrovnik Airport is another option, though it’s farther away (approximately 165 km).

You can take a bus or rent a car for the journey from Dubrovnik to Makarska.

Within Makarska, local buses connect the town centre to nearby beaches and villages along the Riviera.

Whether you’re floating in the calm waters, soaking up the sun, or simply gazing at the breathtaking scenery, 

There’s no shortage of things to do here, either. One of my favourite activities was wandering through the Old Town.

Its narrow, cobblestone streets are full of character, lined with quaint shops, traditional restaurants, and hidden corners waiting to be discovered.

For a bit of nature and serenity, the walk around St. Peter’s Forest Park was absolutely stunning. The mix of lush greenery, sea views, and rocky coastline.

Now, I have to admit, we didn’t tackle the famous Biokovo Skywalk.

As someone with a fear of heights, the idea of walking on a glass platform high above the mountain slopes was definitely not my thing!

That said, we met a few adventurous travellers who braved it, and they couldn’t stop raving about the incredible views and unique experience.

If you’re not afraid of heights, it’s one for the bucket list.

If you’re planning a visit, it’s worth noting that Makarska can get quite busy during the peak summer season.

While the lively atmosphere might be perfect for some, if you prefer a quieter, more relaxed vibe, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons, like spring or early autumn.

You’ll still enjoy the gorgeous weather but with fewer crowds to navigate.

Whether you’re here for the beaches, the history, or just to soak in the incredible views, Makarska is a destination that leaves a lasting impression.

It’s a place we’d gladly return to time and time again.
