Budva, Montenegro: Beaches And History, You Just Can’t Miss

We chose Budva as our “home base” during our time in Montenegro, and it couldn’t have been more perfect.

Its central location made it an ideal starting point for day trips to incredible destinations like the historic town of Kotor, the stunning shores of Jaz Beach, and the picturesque island village of Sveti Stefan.

Budva offered the perfect balance of convenience and entertainment.

The town has plenty to do, from exploring the charming Old Town with its cobblestone streets and ancient walls to enjoying the vibrant nightlife along the lively promenade.

The promenade buzzes with energy at night, featuring beachfront bars, restaurants, markets, amusement parks for kids and street performers, ensuring there’s always something to see or experience.

For those moments when we wanted to relax, Budva’s beautiful beaches were the perfect escape.

Whether it was soaking up the sun, dipping our toes in the Adriatic, or sipping a drink at a beachside café, Budva had just the right vibe.

Choosing Budva as our base allowed us to enjoy the best of both worlds, the ease of exploring Montenegro’s stunning coastline and the convenience of having a lively, well-equipped town to return to at the end of the day.

For us, it truly was the perfect place to stay!

History of Budva

Budva’s rich history stretches back over 2,500 years.

You’ll find evidence of human settlement in the area dating to the 5th century BC, when Illyrian tribes first established a fortified community on the rocky peninsula.

Throughout the centuries, Budva has been home to various civilisations.

The Greeks and Romans left their mark, with Roman rule bringing significant development to the town.

In the Middle Ages, Budva evolved into a medieval walled city.

Its strategic location on the Adriatic coast made it a coveted prize for rival powers.

The town’s fortifications, which you can still explore today, were built during this period.

Venetian rule, lasting from 1420 to 1797, greatly influenced Budva’s architecture and culture.

You’ll notice this impact in the Old Town’s narrow streets and elegant stone buildings.

Budva faced numerous challenges over the centuries, including pirate attacks and devastating earthquakes.

The most recent major earthquake struck in 1979, causing significant damage to the Old Town.

However, careful restoration work has preserved its historic charm.

To delve deeper into Budva’s past, you should visit the Budva Museum.

Here, you’ll discover artefacts spanning millennia, from ancient Greek and Roman relics to medieval and Venetian-era treasures.

Exploring The Old Town

Budva’s Old Town, known as Stari Grad, is a must-visit destination.

This medieval walled city dates back to the 5th century BC and boasts narrow cobblestone streets lined with charming stone houses.

As you wander through the maze-like alleys, you’ll stumble upon quaint shops, cafes, and restaurants.

Don’t miss the chance to visit the Church of St John, a 7th-century Catholic church that stands as a testament to Budva’s rich history.

The Old Town also houses several museums, including the Archaeological Museum, where you can learn about the region’s ancient past.

Visit The Citadela Fortress

Perched atop the Old Town, the Citadela Fortress offers panoramic views of Budva and the Adriatic Sea.

This 15th-century structure once served as a defensive stronghold and now houses a small museum.

Inside, you’ll find artefacts from various periods of Budva’s history, including Roman and medieval times.

The fortress’s terrace is an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts, especially during sunset.

Entry to the Citadela requires a small fee, but the views and historical insights make it well worth the visit.

Stroll The Budva City Walls

The City Walls of Budva encircle the Old Town and offer a unique perspective of the city.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, these well-preserved fortifications stretch for about 2 kilometres.

As you walk along the walls, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the sea on one side and the terracotta roofs of the Old Town on the other.

The walls feature several towers and gates, each with its own story.

The walk takes about an hour, and it’s best to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat.

Basking On Budva’s Beaches

Budva is renowned for its beautiful beaches, with over 20 to choose from along its 35-kilometre coastline.

Slovenska Plaža, the longest beach in Budva, stretches for 1.6 kilometres and offers a mix of pebbles and sand.

Mogren Beach, divided into Mogren I and Mogren II, is a picturesque spot connected by a tunnel through the cliff.

It’s known for its clear waters and dramatic scenery.

For a more secluded experience, head to Bečići Beach, just south of Budva.

This 2-kilometre stretch of fine sand has won awards for its beauty.

Visit Sventi Nikola

Sveti Nikola, also known as Hawaii Island, is a small island just off the coast of Budva.

It’s easily accessible by boat from the marina, with regular services running throughout the day.

The island boasts three beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush vegetation. It’s an ideal spot for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking.

You can explore the island’s hiking trails or visit the small church of St Nicholas, which gives the island its name.

 

Take A Coastal Walk

A coastal walk from Budva to Sveti Stefan offers breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding landscape.

The route is about 6 kilometres long and takes you past several beaches and coves.

Along the way, you’ll pass the famous Dancing Girl statue, also known as the Budva Ballerina.

This bronze sculpture, perched on a rock by the sea, has become an iconic symbol of Budva.

The walk ends at the islet of Sveti Stefan, a luxury resort with a fascinating history as a fortified fishing village.

Adventure And Water Activities

For thrill-seekers, Budva offers a range of adventure activities.

Paragliding from the nearby mountains provides a bird’s-eye view of the coastline and is suitable for beginners and experienced flyers alike.

Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy kayaking, jet-skiing, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Many beaches offer equipment rental and lessons.

Scuba diving is popular, with several dive sites around Budva featuring underwater caves and diverse marine life.

 

Night Markets

As the sun sets, Budva’s night markets come to life.

These lively markets offer a mix of local crafts, souvenirs, and street food.

You’ll find stalls selling handmade jewellery, traditional Montenegrin products, and local delicacies.

It’s a great place to pick up unique gifts or sample regional specialities.

The markets often feature live music and entertainment, adding to the festive atmosphere.

A Walk Along The Promenade

Budva’s promenade, known as the Seaside Promenade, stretches along the coast and offers a pleasant walk with sea views.

It’s lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops.

As you stroll, you’ll pass several beaches and can stop for a refreshing drink or a bite to eat.

The promenade is particularly lively in the evenings when locals and tourists alike come out to enjoy the cool sea breeze.

Keep an eye out for street performers and artists who often set up along the promenade.

Aquapark Budva For All Ages

Aquapark Budva is a water park that offers fun for visitors of all ages.

It features a variety of water slides, pools, and attractions spread over 41,800 square metres.

The park includes areas for young children, thrill rides for adrenaline seekers, and relaxation zones for those who prefer a more laid-back experience.

With on-site restaurants and sunbathing areas, you can easily spend a full day enjoying the park’s facilities.

Day Trips Around Budva

Budva’s prime location makes it an excellent base for exploring Montenegro’s stunning coastline and historic towns.

You can easily reach picturesque beaches, charming villages, and cultural landmarks within a short drive.

Jaz Beach

Just 2.5 km from Budva, Jaz Beach offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling town centre.

This 1.2 km-long pebble beach boasts crystal-clear waters and a relaxed atmosphere.

You’ll find plenty of amenities, including sunbeds, umbrellas, and water sports equipment for hire.

 

The beach is divided into two sections: a public area and a private section with bars and restaurants.

During summer, Jaz Beach hosts music festivals and concerts, attracting both locals and tourists.

For a unique experience, consider hiking the nearby trails that offer panoramic views of the coastline.

Sventi Stefan

Sveti Stefan, a small islet connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, is a must-visit destination 6 km southeast of Budva.

This former fishing village has been transformed into a luxury resort, but you can still admire its 15th-century architecture from the mainland.

The public beach adjacent to Sveti Stefan is perfect for sunbathing and swimming.

You’ll find several restaurants and cafes nearby, offering stunning views of the islet.

For history enthusiasts, visit the Church of St. Stephen on the islet’s highest point, dating back to the 15th century.

Kotor And Bay Of Kotor

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Kotor, nestled in the Bay of Kotor, is a 30-minute drive from Budva.

This medieval town is renowned for its well-preserved Venetian architecture and impressive city walls.

Explore Kotor’s narrow streets, visit St. Tryphon’s Cathedral, and climb the 1,355 steps to San Giovanni Fortress for breathtaking views of the bay.

You can also take a boat tour to see the bay’s other charming towns, such as Perast and its artificial islands.

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Our Lady of the Rocks, a church built on an artificial island in the bay.

Accommodation

Budva offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit your needs and budget.

You’ll find everything from luxury hotels to budget-friendly guesthouses in this popular Montenegrin coastal town.

Keep in mind that vehicles aren’t allowed in the old town, so plan accordingly when visiting this area.

Best Place To Eat

Paradise Food in Budva quickly became our go-to spot for delicious vegan and plant-based meals.

This cozy café offers an impressive menu filled with fresh, flavourful dishes that cater to a variety of tastes.

From hearty mains to a wide selection of mouthwatering desserts and treats, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Not only is the food amazing, but it’s also incredibly affordable, making it a budget-friendly option for travellers.

We loved it so much that we found ourselves eating there most days during our stay in Budva!

Final Thoughts

Our time in Budva was nothing short of amazing. The town perfectly balances charm, convenience, and excitement, making it an ideal base for exploring the region.

Its central location allowed us to easily take day trips to stunning spots like Kotor, Jaz Beach, and Sveti Stefan, ensuring that every day was filled with new adventures.

The friendly and welcoming locals added to the experience, making us feel right at home.

Whether we were wandering through the cobblestone streets of Budva’s Old Town, relaxing on one of the many beautiful beaches, or enjoying the lively atmosphere along the promenade, there was always something to do and people to meet.

Budva offers so much, from its rich history and quaint charm in the Old Town to its vibrant nightlife, bustling markets, and endless dining options.

And when we wanted to unwind, the serene beaches provided the perfect escape.

That said, Budva can get incredibly busy during peak season, with large crowds flocking to the town to enjoy its many attractions.

Overall, Budva had everything we needed, convenience, culture, relaxation, and adventure, all wrapped up in one picturesque coastal town.
