Bol, Croatia: Why You Must Visit

Croatia | 0 comments

Bol, located on the southern end of Brač Island, is a true gem of Croatia and was high on my travel bucket list.

One of the main reasons I wanted to visit was to experience Zlatni Rat Beach, also known as Golden Horn Beach.

I had seen countless photos of its iconic, ever-changing shape on travel websites, and I knew it was a spot that couldn’t be missed.

We arrived early in the morning on a ferry from Split and began our adventure by strolling through the charming town.

As we wandered, taking in the sights, I was struck by a mix of awe and regret, I couldn’t believe how beautiful Bol was!

Its relaxed atmosphere, friendly locals, and stunning architecture made it clear that this town was more than just a quick stop; it was the ideal location for a family getaway.

The quaint streets, framed by stone buildings with blooming bougainvillea, led us to delightful cafes, artisan shops, and picturesque views of the Adriatic.

The pace of life here felt slower, more intentional, and deeply welcoming.

I quickly realised we’d made a mistake by planning only a day trip.

Bol wasn’t just a stopover, it was the kind of place where you could truly unwind, soak in the surroundings, and make lasting memories.

Things to see and do

Visit Zlatni Rat Beach

As you approach, you’ll see why Zlatni Rat is often called the Golden Horn or Golden Cape.

Its crystal-clear turquoise waters, creating a mesmerising sight.

Zlatni Rat Beach is a stunning natural wonder on the island of Brač.This unique pebble beach extends into the Adriatic Sea, forming a distinctive V-shape that shifts with the tides and winds.

The beach is ideal for sunbathing and swimming. You can rent loungers and umbrellas, or find a spot on the smooth pebbles.

There are plenty of eateries in the middle of Zlatni Rat. We didn’t buy anything from them as we bought our own food that lasted the day.

However, it looked like there was a wide variety of food options and drinks.

Remember to bring water shoes, as the pebbles can be uncomfortable underfoot.

The beach can get crowded in peak season, so arrive early to secure a good spot.

Visit Blaca Hermitage

Blaca Hermitage is a hidden gem on the island of Brač that you won’t want to miss. This remarkable attraction offers a glimpse into a bygone era when monks lived in harmony with nature.

Built into a steep cliff above Blaca Bay, the hermitage dates back to the mid-16th century. It served as a secluded sanctuary for followers of the Glagolitic script, an ancient Croatian alphabet.

To reach Blaca, you have two options:

  1. Take a boat trip from Bol along the west coast of Brač
  2. Drive to the nearby village of Nerežišća and hike to the hermitage

If you choose the boat route, prepare for an hour-long climb up a secluded valley after disembarking.

The Town of Bol

As the day drew to a close, I couldn’t shake the feeling that we had only scratched the surface of what Bol had to offer.

The town seemed to hold so many hidden treasures, secluded coves waiting to be discovered and a laid-back nightlife that promised an entirely different side of its charm.

While we didn’t have the chance to experience everything this time, I wanted to ensure these highlights were noted for anyone planning their visit.

Bol isn’t just a bucket-list destination; it’s a place that truly warrants a longer stay to appreciate its full beauty and allure.

If we ever return, and trust me, we will, we’ll make sure to spend a few nights soaking in everything this stunning town has to offer.

From lazy mornings by the beach to a beautifully prepared meal at Biomania,

Bol is the kind of destination that leaves you longing for just one more day.

For now we had a 4 to 5 hour trip back to Okrug Gornji just outside Trogir
